Saint Paul stigmatized

The canvas of the Saint Paul stigmatized, the last work signed by Vittore Carpaccio (1520)

Particular attention to this canvas, 'St Paul Stigmatized' by Vittore Carpaccio, is merited as it represents the most important pictorial work in the whole Dominican Monastery. The Apostle in his green tunic with purple mantle is placed on a flowered lawn with the book of Epistles in his left hand, a sword in his right. He looks intensely at a cross piercing his chest. On the left of the painting there is a scroll certifying the date (1520) and the signature of the artist. Perhaps the painting was originally destined for the church of San Domenico di Castello in Venice and then transferred here, it is the last work dated by the artist and is certainly one of the most prized works present in Chioggia. The statuary attitude of the apostle and the expressive severity of his look express an overwhelming power and spiritual authority.
